46 or 47 Years and Counting - James Walker
46 or 47 Years and Counting by WA artist James Walker - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
46 or 47 Years and Counting, I can’t remember if it was 1976 or 1977 when dad started flying radio-controlled aeroplanes, but whenever it was, it meant the start of many journeys to the ‘flying field’. For most of my childhood we would venture to the flying field on a Saturday or Sunday morning where I’d watch the model aircraft, and the air traffic approaching and departing Launceston Airport. Most mornings were a mix of excitement and boredom, and if my friends came along, we’d have some fun and explore the surrounds. Whatever mood I was in I secretly hoped someone would have a spectacular crash. Sometimes it happened, but mostly it didn’t. Anyhoo, I never flew the models, and never learned how to, which I demonstrated last year after dad handed me the controls. Turns out I got the spectacular crash I’d been hoping for.
