A Fine Balance, Falls Creek - Fiona Hiscock
A Fine Balance, Falls Creek by VIC artist Fiona Hiscock - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
Close observation of nature is a strong part of my ceramic practice. While making watercolour studies of snow gum eucalypts in the alpine environment of Falls Creek, I was often kept company by a pair of flame robins. As I transferred the watercolour studies onto a hand built ceramic vessel, I thought about the interconnected relationship of all species within the natural world, the importance of water for survival and the way our land has adapted to increased human habitation through the effects of colonisation. The glass holding the water represents my sense that this is a fine balancing act – often at risk of being broken – and a fragile equilibrium for which we are all responsible.
