Autumn - Deb Mckay
Autumn by SA artist Deb Mckay - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
As the seasons turn to Autumn, the leaves change and the light fades, the trees in the landscape morph. The trees that have long been used by the Peramangk people and more recent settlers as important signposts in the landscape, shelter and food sources for people, animals, birds and insects. It is the trees that we first see in this landscape that Heysen painted, lived amongst, respected and protected. Through the clay this work seeks to explore the light quality and the impact of the colours that Autumn brings and the uniqueness of these trees, both native and introduced. This time of year gives the trees and the landscape a different personality. This change of light was celebrated by Heysen, and his work admired and collected because of it. The trees are the recognisable markers in the landscape, this work seeks to honour them.
Materials: Ceramic - porcelain.
