Choose Your Tree by SA artist Luisa Stocco  - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.

Confronted by the news that Australia leads the world as one of the highest consumers of fast fashion and leaders in the discarding of unwanted textiles into landfill, leaves me feeling shame and perplexed. The answer seems simple. We need to ‘just stop.’ The repetitive quality of slow stitching helps calm and ground me. The feel of the fabric and the intuitive manoeuvring of the needle and thread trusts the pattern and design to unfold. The only aspect that keeps the work focused and moving toward a resolution is the tree; the aged, strong eucalypt with leaves as large as my hands.
