Early Morning and Mt. Feathertop Bright Vic. 1974/1988/2024 - Tim Gregory
Early Morning and Mt. Feathertop Bright Vic. 1974/1988/2024 by NSW artist Tim Gregory - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
The artwork is a modification of two original 20th Century Australian landscape paintings purchased from eBay. The work is made by sanding back the paintings, collecting the sanded pigment and making new paint using silver-gelatin as the binder. The light-sensitive paint is reapplied to the voids left from sanding. The silver-gelatin turns the paintings into undeveloped photographic plates that are gradually exposed the longer they are exhibited. At a material level, painting and photography are combined. The work disrupts the proliferation of settler landscape paintings, what William Kentridge calls “documents of disremembering”, by introducing voids that index their own display. The audience and gallery become active in this new history of the artwork, as our act of seeing the landscapes make the voids darker. The original paintings’ slow aging is contrasted by the modifications. They become durational documents of the continuing impact of settler “seeing”.
Materials: Purchased paintings, sanded pigment hand ground with undeveloped silver-gelatin emulsion
