Elemental - Simone Linder-Patton
Elemental by SA artist Simone Linder-Patton - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
My work is a visceral response to the natural elements and destructive forces that shape the Australian bushland and in turn, our relationship with it. Through pit firing I explore the dynamic interplay between creation and destruction whilst reflecting on the responsibilities we bear as stewards of the earth. The organic, unpredictable nature of pit-fired ceramics mirrors the delicate balance of our ecosystems, reminding us that every action has a ripple effect on the world around us. My approach to pit-fired ceramics is informed by a deep respect for the environment. I seek to minimise the ecological footprint of my work by using sustainable materials, reclaimed wood, low-temperature firings and experimenting with natural additives that require less fuel to achieve the desired effects. Through my ceramics, I aim to evoke a sense of reverence for the earth’s resources and to inspire others to consider the environmental footprint of their actions.
