Ghosts of the Trail by SA artist Winnie Pelz- Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.

Gelid chill of Winter morning

damp mist shrouding the hill

Birds silent: no song in such as leaden dawn

Path silent: footfall muffled in the mist.

It was an otherworldly feeling

of spirits present from long ago,

of majestic viminalis once proud and strong

ravaged by fire or felled of gain

with regrowth struggling for stature.

Walking on the Heysen Trail

named for the man who loved the trees,

the ghosts of the past brought memories

of what once was

and reflections on what might be.
