In Defense - Sophie Hann
In Defense by SA artist Sophie Hann - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
I recently saw images of environmental campaigners in Tasmania with the Bob Brown Foundation where the campaigners built a tripod as a symbol of protest against the logging industry in the Tarkine Rainforest. The protestors harnessed themselves to the timber tripod until police removed them. I use this symbol of protest as the central motif set amongst the ghost gums that were so commonly depicted by Hans Heysen. The soft hues of twilight represent the eleventh hour left for climate change.
