Main North Road - Roland Weight
Main North Road by SA artist Roland Weight - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
A painting can be interpreted on many levels. It is small and the oil paint is thickly applied. The subject is unremarkable, even boring on the first view. This part of Adelaide was once covered in beautiful acacia and eucalyptus trees with other plants and many animals. Now it is familiar as a noisy section of the main road where car yards are the dominant feature. The fumes and noise of cars complement the signs and bunting. The sad destruction of this landscape is a result of the human need for transportation and a simplistic approach to development.
