Mantawi (Storm) by Amanda Westley from her exhibition Ngarrindjeri Ruwi.

In Ngarrindjeri there is a story about making it rain on country. A group of Ngarrindjeri men and boys were in the scrub looking for edible plants when one of the boys wanted to pull pani shoot when the men stopped him & said if you pull it the rain will fall on us…the shoot is named pani which means rain because it tastes like water and its stem resembles falling rain. The boy said it wouldn’t rain & ignored the warning and continued to pull the shoot. They headed back to camp and hours later the sky was covered with clouds and it began to rain.

2023, Acrylic on canvas.
