Objects from the Land - Harriet Geater-Johnson
Objects from the Land by SA artist Harriet Geater-Johnson - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
In my work, I explore the often devastating impact of introduced species on the Australian landscape. The colonization of Australia has resulted in the transformation of parts of the rural landscape. Habitation, agricultural practices, and leisure pursuits have degraded, altered and changed the use and function of the land. The introduction of species such as the rabbit (introduced for the sport of hunting), as well as livestock and European plant species have had a catastrophic impact. This has resulted in competition with native species, erosion and overgrazing. Today we grapple with how to deal with decisions of the past and how to restore and reclaim an ecological balance. These objects become remnants of our footprint and reflect mistakes of the past and subsequent scars on the land.
