Ocean Swimming - Laura Williams

Ocean Swimming by VIC artist Laura Williams - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape. 

This work is inspired by my love of swimming in the ocean and the often-overwhelming experience of this environment, being surrounded by deep ocean and vast skies. I made this work using pieces of watercolour paintings on paper which have been cut up and sewn onto backing fabric to create a two-dimensional work with three dimensional elements. I've tried to capture the different elements that make up a coastal landscape, amidst the continual movement of air and water.
 
Laura Williams is an artist from South-West WA, now based in Melbourne. Her art practice explores different aspects of the natural environment, and she creates work inspired by her surroundings or memories of specific places. Laura graduated from UWA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2007 and has exhibited throughout Australia.
