Optical Landscape Forest - Nicole Ayliffe
Optical Landscape Forest by SA artist Nicole Ayliffe - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
I have used the optical qualities of glass to create a three-dimensional illusion of space within my work. The ability of glass to work together with light enhances the engraved imagery, which can be viewed through the glass form. ‘Optical Landscape’ Forest both captures and describes the beauty of nature. Living on a 20acre farm in the Adelaide Hills, I have a strong connection with the land and the environment and I like to use the surrounding design elements in nature as inspiration when creating my glass artwork. By combining imagery with thick clear glass forms, I can create the illusion of space, which emphasises the reflection and refraction of light between the exterior and interior surfaces. The solidity of the form, as well as the curves of the glass highlight the qualities of distortion, movement and space.
