Overburden - Fran Callen
Overburden by SA artist Fran Callen - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
Overburden: The rock or soil layer to be removed to access ore. Overburden To. Make someone. Or something work too. Hard or. Carry, contain. Or deal with. Too. Much This ‘tablescape’ considers environmental/family concerns, exploring parallels between drawing, mothering, and geological/archaeological processes. To plaster casts of house-hold recycling, physical interpretations of geological words are applied. Domestic moments are recorded amongst family discussions about environmental care in our home and backyard. I work with my children across the tabletop, creating these cast plaster drawings, layered with domestic and backyard materials and pigments. They hold personal symbolism, suggesting narrative. Over the tabletop, everything is connected. Please pick up, hold, turn over, and gently replace the objects. Careful.
