remnants_5276 by SA artist Melinda Gaughwin - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
‘remnant_5276’ is a moving image work that speaks to the disintegration of the natural environment due to anthropogenic climate change. The fragmented landscape, depicted through vertically sliced photographic segments, represents as world that is increasingly broken and dislocated. The visual cuts and flickering effect convey a sense of instability and loss, mirroring the disruption that climate change brings to the natural world. An original electronic composition amplifies this unease, creating a haunting atmosphere that underscores the urgency of addressing environmental degradation. The work is conceptually framed from the perspective of a posthuman in the distant future, looking back at and attempting to make sense of data remnants of a once-thriving landscape. This futural gaze intensifies the discomfort, urging viewers to consider the unsettling legacy we are creating and how future beings might interpret the environmental traces we leave behind.
