Samphire by Lesa Farrant  - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.

My works in porcelain continue to focus on the uneasy cohabitation of plants and plastic in our coastal landscape. ‘Samphire’ is influenced by the Aldinga Washpool, a remnant coastal freshwater and estuarine lagoon system at Aldinga Beach. As well as being a significant cultural site it is home to rare and vulnerable native plants and animals. ‘Samphire’ is made by making plaster moulds of small plastic bottles that I’ve found while walking along the beach. I make plaster moulds of these objects and then use these to slip cast porcelain bottle forms. I’m then able to create forms that attempt to mimic the plant on a much larger scale, hoping to draw attention to this critical sediment filter marshland plant that I feel is often overlooked. I draw similarities to Heysen’s paintings, whereby he enables viewers to see the often-overlooked vast eucalypt trees surrounding his home near Hahndorf.

Materials: Slip cast porcelain
Dimensions (cm): 140 H x 100 W x 3 D
