The Imagined Aurora - Datsun Tran
The Imagined Aurora by SA artist Datsun Tran - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
There was extreme solar storm activity recently, causing the Aurora Australis to be visible as far north as Queensland. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Aurora without having to travel too far. I saw people post images on social media from their backyards and nearby locales. Spurred on by jealousy, I spent numerous evenings driving to various locations around the Adelaide Hills. I tracked solar activity on my phone. I looked at weather forecasts to increase my chances of success. I learnt what Kp numbers meant. I tried searching in the early evening. I tried searching in the middle of the night. Yet, it eluded me. The solar storms lasted a week or so and I felt like everyone was seeing the Aurora but me. This painting is what I imagined what one of the most beautiful displays by nature would have looked like.
