Untitled (Cnr of Wuuluman Rd and Uungula Rd) Time is the Flowing Movement by NSW artist Asher Milgate - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
This work draws inspiration from my childhood, my relationships with First Nations people—particularly the Binjang community in Wiradjuri country—and the work of Hans Heysen, whose unique dedication to the Australian landscape, especially his reverence for the iconic eucalyptus, has left an indelible mark on both Australian art and environmental conservation. Heysen’s devotion to capturing the Australian gum tree serves, in part, as a foundation for my own approach. He too saw trees as sentient beings, carriers of strength and dignity, and advocates for their protection. Like Heysen, I seek an intimate and introspective approach, where the tree and the person share a reciprocal connection, each shaped by the other’s presence. This project is both a tribute to the silent, steadfast strength of trees and a call to deepen our respect and responsibility toward these essential witnesses to our lives and landscapes.
