Washed Away - Libby Wakefield
Washed Away by NSW artist Libby Wakefield - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
Painted as a response to a major flooding of my local river, this work reflects on imagery of the rushing water of that event and the large eucalyptus globulus trees that are present on parts of the riverbank. These trees now only exist in areas of riverbank that have not been affected by climate change, agriculture or urban development. The painting shows a landscape teetering on the seen and unseen, real and imagined, giving a sense of place, ever constant in my world, but also rapidly changing. The river and its banks are part of my daily practice and the impact of these environmental changes seeps into my visual and personal experience, just as the tones and muted forms appear to seep into the painting. The layering of repeated tonal glazes, graduating from dark to light attempts to show the fading strength and presence of these beautiful trees.
