We Didn't Keep Our Promises! - Joe Felber
We Didn't Keep Our Promises! by SA artist Joe Felber - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
Hans Heysen was an ardent conservationist with a love for the natural environment. My reflection on his work is a triptych concerned with climate change and the increasing decline of the rich Australian biodiversity. I collected flowers and leaves and pressed them in my desert sketchbook. My practice expands like a kaleidoscope, materials like beeswax-ink, questioning why our great pollinator – bees are in danger and what it means to people and our planet. The square beeswax-ink panel represents a state of increasing heat, a melting bare desert landscape. The photographic panel with the Science text “We Don’t Think the Way We Think We Think” by James Kennedy alerted my attention to his book. The cognitive revolution of the 1960s and 1970s brought psychology back from the dark ages and is now more relevant than ever, addressing that we didn’t keep our promises.
Materials: Wax, ink on marine plywood, photograph c-print metal tray and sketchbook
