What Was Done in the Dark Has Been Brought to the Light - Lee Harrop
What Was Done in the Dark Has Been Brought to the Light by NT artist Lee Harrop - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
‘What Was Done in the Dark Has Been Brought to the Light’ is engraved into a discarded geological core sample which is a cylindrical rock form created during the process of drilling in mining exploration. This material has been extracted from hundreds of meters below the ground through the process of diamond core drilling. The core is brought to light through the extractive process of mining that happens out of public view and continues mostly unnoticed. Countless meters of core, like this piece, are mostly discarded as a mining by-product. As we mine our planet using earth altering extractive practices in search of potential mineral resources, we undermine our planet and existence. This artwork is intended to expose viewers to the extractive mining practices while challenging our belief in not only the origin of life but to our existence if we lack responsibility for it.
Materials: Hand-engraved geological core sample from the Yilgarn Craton, WA
