Women's Secret Place for Having Babies - Heather Watson
Women's Secret Place for Having Babies by NT artist Heather Watson - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.
Heather Watson was born at Aliwanyawanyu rock hole in Central Australia; the place of the Ngintaka tjukurpa (perentie lizard creation story). She has a special responsibility to look after the Ngintaka story and has markings on her body that signify the Ngintaka. Heather belongs to the Pitjantjatjara language and cultural group. Heather's paintings reflect stories of her birthplace and the time she spent with her husband living a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the desert.
The women’s secret place for having babies is of ancient significance to women of the tribe and is where all life starts. It is a place of great celebration and the protective continuation of women’s business in privacy and secrecy. This experience is a primal connection of our humanity with the landscape and the importance of the Earth to support our well-being and existence.
