Xanthorrhoea Precipice by VIC artist Benedict Sibley  - Finalist in the 2024 Heysen Prize for Landscape.

Between 2022 and 2024 I undertook two residencies in the remote Gammon Ranges, South Australia. Upon arrival, I was profoundly challenged by the sheer scale and complexity of this country. The Gammon Ranges are part of the traditional lands of the Adnyamathanha people. Striking up friendships within the local community, I was introduced to many sites of cultural and natural significance, which greatly enhanced my understanding of the region. After witnessing the after effects of an extreme heat event, the baking and dieback that has occurred in recent years, it is clear that this astonishing bioregion, much like the Great Barrier Reef or alpine plant and animal communities, is existing at the very limits of its ecological range. With further extreme heat events anticipated, these unique natural ecosystems may have nowhere to go.
